- FREQUENCIES EXCEPT IN RESPONSE TO A REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE.
- ULTIMATE PRIORITY MUST BE GIVEN TO IMMEDIATE EMERGENCY RELIEF
- COMMUNICATIONS.
-
- NATIONAL TRAFFIC SYSTEM OFFICIALS ADVISE THAT WELFARE INQUIRY
- TRAFFIC BE ROUTED VIA NORMAL NTS PATHS. PRIORITY IN HEALTH AND
- WELFARE TRAFFIC HANDLING MUST BE<x~RDED TO MESSAGES ORIGINATING IN
- THE AFFECTED AREAS. AMATEURS SHOULD ADVISE THE PUBLIC TO ATTEMPT
- NORMAL TELEPHONE SERVICE FIRST BEFORE INITIATING AN INQUIRY VIA
- AMATEUR RADIO. MESSAGES SHOULD CONTAIN COMPLETE ADDRESS AND PHONE

-
- A comment on the current required to hold the memory contents:
-
- The .5 mA measured with the power switch in the off position is not
- the current required to maintain the RAM contents in the processor.
- Rather, it is being drawn by a voltage divider used to create a 5.6
- volt regulator using a 3 terminal 5 volt regulator. A 10K resistor
- is placed between the regulator output and the ground terminal of the
- regulator IC. The regulator will force 5 volts across this resistor
- and therefore .5 ma will flow in it. The ground terminal of the
- regulator is connected to battery ground through 1.2K. This .5 ma
- will flow to battery ground through the 1.2K raising the regulator
- ground terminal .6 volts above battery ground.
-
- The reason the designers wanted 5.6 volts from this regulator was to
- provide 5 volts on the other side of a diode which is used to isolate
- the regulator from the capacitor which holds the memory contents when
- the battery pack is removed. The RAM is located in the CMOS processor
- (IC201) so this 5 volt regulator provides the Vdd for the processor
- when the scanner is on.
-
- I was able to reduce the switch off current drain by a factor of 10
- by replacing the resistor between the ground terminal of the regulator
- and battery ground (R243) with a diode, and increasing the value of the
- 10K resistor (R244) to 100K.
-
- Low battery warning:
-
- I have also modified the low battery warning circuitry in my scanner
- so that the warnings start at 6.6 volts (originally 7.2V in my unit.)
- I had no data on the part (IC-204) that acts as a comparator to detect
- low battery voltage so I experimented with a resistive voltage divider
- in place of the zener diode (D203) and 150K resistor (R208). I ended up
- with a 5.11K in place of the diode and a 10K for R208. This circuit
- will draw .5 ma or so from a fully charged battery but this is negligable
- compared to the total current requirements of the scanner. (This current
- only flows with the power switch on.)
-
- While these modifications have increased my satisfaction with my
- BC205XLT, I would not recommend them to people who have not had some
- experience working with surface mount components. Static discharge
- precautions should also be taken. Proceed at your own risk!

- It may be objectionable, but unless it contains business traffic or
- comes from a country without a third party agreement, it is NOT illegal.
- There has long been a myth in amateur radio that phone patches (or
- autopatches) cannot be used to evade tolls. It is just that - a myth.
-
- I think one of the main problems with the MM net was that they used to
- be very lax about checking the validity of the licenses of the amateurs
- on boats for whom they ran patches. I understand that over the last year or
- two they have been very careful.
-
- Disclaimer: I rarely frequent 14.313, having only used it to find other
- hams for a QSO, so I'm no expert on 14.313 practices.

- I've had 2 2600's now. The first one quit during the first QSO (TX Problem),
- the second had a bad microphone. Now that I got that fixed... It's not bad
- but the selectivity could be much better. I'm going to velcro my active audio
- filter to mine. The other thing is it has a lot of birdies on my GM Riviera
- (1987). This total electronic nightmare causes a couple of birdies - 28.305
- and several others. I use it only on SSB as I'm a Technician. For Novice and
- Technician it's too much radio. It would be better to get a multi-band rig
- when you upgrade. I bought mine because it was only a few dollars more than
- what Radio Shack wanted for an SSB only rig. I got FM and PL tone for almost
- the same price. All in all... I've got a Japan contact, an Austrian contact,
- and many US contacts from Oklahoma. You have to wait till the kilo-watters
- go home, then your 56, 58 mobile signal will get through. I usually call CQ
- as I get more contacts that way. If I try and compete, I lose. Needs a linear
- with maybe 100 watts for mobile. I like it. I'd love it with more selectivity
- though, as the QRM ruins some good weak contacts. Steve, N5OWK.
